Duolingo is fun, low-barrier and partly free. But is it enough to actually learn to speak Dutch — or to prepare for civic integration? An honest, unsponsored comparison.
I get asked this a lot: "can't I just use Duolingo?" The honest answer: partly, yes. Duolingo is a great way to start — low-barrier, playful, and it builds a daily habit. I use similar exercise formats myself in my lessons sometimes.
But Duolingo and a real teacher do structurally different things. Below I've put them side by side — not to bash Duolingo, but to help you judge what you need right now.
💡 Important nuance about Duolingo in 2026: since 2025 the free version has been significantly cut back by an "energy" system — free users now get only about 15-20 minutes a day. Unlimited use without ads now costs around $5-7/month; real AI conversation practice sits behind a pricier tier of roughly $14/month. So even Duolingo itself pushes users toward more paid speaking practice as they progress.
Duolingo works well if: you are just starting out and want to get used to Dutch, you want to expand your vocabulary between other activities, or you want to build a daily learning habit without a big investment.
A real teacher makes the difference if: you are preparing for the civic integration exam (speaking and KNM simply are not trained by an app), you notice you keep making the same kind of mistake without knowing why, you need to function in a meeting or a conversation with a doctor, or you are just stuck and do not know how to move forward.
Most of my students combine both: Duolingo (or similar apps) between lessons for vocabulary, and lessons for everything that only works with a real person — speaking, feedback and focused exam preparation.
I regularly see students who have practised with an app for months and then have to hold a real conversation for the first time, and discover that reading and recognising is very different from forming a sentence yourself under time pressure. That is not a criticism of the app; it is just a different skill. My advice: feel free to use an app for vocabulary, but do not wait too long to actually speak. The sooner you make mistakes in front of someone who corrects them, the faster you progress.
