This dialogue uses five verbs in the past tense (imperfectum) and present perfect (perfectum) — here's how each one works.

| hoeven (to need to, usually negative) | ik hoefde / wij hoefden | ik heb gehoeven |
💡 Tip: Vergeten and vinden are irregular ("strong") verbs — their imperfectum changes the vowel instead of adding -de/-te. Verbouwen, werken and hoeven are regular ("weak") verbs, so they follow the normal -de/-te and ge-...-d/-t pattern. All five use hebben as the auxiliary verb in the perfectum, not zijn.
