"One question I often get — in trial lessons and via email and social media — is: how do you actually teach? In this article I explain my approach. No standard programme, but lessons that truly fit you."

From healthcare coach to Dutch language coach

My teaching method is shaped by more than just my experience as a Dutch language coach. For years I worked as a counsellor and coach in Dutch healthcare. In that role, I learned to truly listen to people, understand their challenges, and work together to find solutions that fit them.

I bring that experience into every lesson. Everyone learns in their own way and has their own goals, insecurities, and obstacles. That's why I don't believe in a standard approach, but in personal guidance. My teaching style is flexible and is always adapted to the student's level, interests, challenges and goals. I take the time to discover what a student is struggling with and adapt my lessons accordingly.

Learning a new language isn't just about grammar and vocabulary. It's also about overcoming boundaries: the fear of making mistakes, gaining the confidence to speak Dutch, and feeling at home in a new environment. My goal is not only to help students improve their Dutch, but also to give them the confidence to use the language in everyday life.

Because of my background as a coach, I combine structure, patience, and personal attention. My academic training at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has also shaped the way I structure lessons and approach language analytically. Together, we create a safe and motivating learning environment where every student can grow at their own pace.

Learn Dutch the way that suits you

Every student learns differently. That is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. At Dutch Together, personal guidance, maximum speaking time and tailor-made lessons are central. Whether you are learning Dutch for work, study, the civic integration exam or the State Exam NT2, lessons are fully adapted to your level, goals and interests.

My goal is simple: get you speaking as much Dutch as possible from the very first lesson.

Teaching materials per level — A1 to C1

I use the proven BOOM NT2 methods, combined with my own materials, current videos, news articles, listening exercises and practical assignments — blending solid grammar with real-life Dutch.

Plenty of speaking time every lesson

Speaking is at the heart of every lesson. I believe you learn a language by actively using it. We practise through conversations, role plays, discussions, presentations and real-life situations. Listening and reading serve as preparation for speaking — so all four skills develop together.

Grammar when you need it

Grammar matters, but it doesn't always need a lengthy introduction. I explain grammar at the moment it becomes relevant, so you can apply new rules immediately in conversation. Topics include word order, separable verbs, subordinate clauses, passive voice and formal language.

Lessons aligned with your goals

Every student has their own goals. You can suggest topics yourself — travel, conversations with colleagues, meetings, job applications, writing emails. Lessons always connect to your daily practice.

Homework and personal support

Writing exercises are done at home. I correct them outside of class and give detailed personal feedback — keeping lesson time free for speaking and interaction.

Have a question between lessons? You can always send me a message — I'm here for you.

Exam preparation

For students preparing for an exam, we use official practice exams, past papers and exam exercises covering reading, listening, writing and speaking. You'll know exactly what to expect and go in with confidence.
