When do you use een?
Een is the indefinite article in Dutch. Sometimes een also means the number 1 — in that case it's often written as één, with accents.
1. Een as the indefinite article
You use een when it doesn't matter which specific person, animal or thing is meant — you simply mean one out of a group.
- Ik zoek een dokter. — I'm looking for a doctor.
- Hij koopt een fiets. — He's buying a bike.
- Wij boeken een hotel. — We're booking a hotel.
- Heb je een pen? — Do you have a pen?
2. Een as the number 1 (één)
Sometimes een indicates a quantity of one. When you want to emphasise that or avoid confusion, you write één with accents.
- Ik heb een broer. — I have one brother.
- Gebruik één appel, niet twee. — Use one apple, not two.
- Ik zie één auto en twee fietsen. — I see one car and two bikes.
De or het?
About 80% of Dutch nouns take de. Not sure? Just use de — statistically it's your safest bet.
